Zach Berman, an Eagles beat writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Comcast SportsNet analyst, visited COM 257 (intro sports communication) this afternoon to share his experience as a sports media professional. Berman graduated from Syracuse in 2008 and has also spent time at the Washington Post, Newark-Star Ledger and Philadelphia Daily News.

Berman talked extensively about his experience as an undergraduate student in Syracuse’s highly-regard Newhouse School of Communication, detailing his internships with the Philadelphia Eagles, Comcast SportsNet, the Inquirer and the Washington Post.

“You need to make sure you are either different or better than the next person,” Berman said. “Being different or better is going to give you an advantage that will separate you.”

Berman also shared his experiences covering the Eagles since the 2012 season. As a beat writer, he attends practice, travels to away games and so much more to allow the fans access to the team. Berman talked frequently about his mindset when covering the team.

“I always keep in mind that I am writing about people,” Berman said. “That’s the most important thing – understanding that this is about people.”

Berman’s written pieces for the Inquirer can include pregame coverage, game recaps or postgame analysis. Follow Zach on Twitter: @ZBerm.
